<p>Not the phrase I was expecting to write, as every time the Aurora Borealis had been strong enough to view here previously, it was either cloudy, I&#8217;d missed hearing about it until afterwards, or it just wasn&#8217;t visible at all!</p>

<p>But last night I had the camera set up ready (indoors &#8211; I didn&#8217;t want to be outside for hours!), in the hope I might get lucky. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="863" height="512" src="https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1975" srcset="https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora1.jpg 863w, https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora1-300x178.jpg 300w, https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora1-768x456.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px" /></figure>

<p>The Aurora wasn&#8217;t actually visible by eye &#8211; it just looked slightly cloudy on the horizon (where you can see the purple colour on the photo above), and it just looked a bit lighter above the tree. </p>

<p>However, when you look at the screen on the camera, you could make out the green &#8211; and it certainly came out in the photos!</p>

<p></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="863" height="512" src="https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora2-plane-e.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1976" srcset="https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora2-plane-e.jpg 863w, https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora2-plane-e-300x178.jpg 300w, https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora2-plane-e-768x456.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px" /></figure>

<p>A 10 second exposure means you get the light trail effect from a passing plane, which complimented the Aurora. I wonder if the passengers on the plane were able to see the Northern Lights?</p>

<p></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="863" height="512" src="https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora3-towards-solsbury-hill.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1977" srcset="https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora3-towards-solsbury-hill.jpg 863w, https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora3-towards-solsbury-hill-300x178.jpg 300w, https://padfoot.org.uk/bath/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-11-aurora3-towards-solsbury-hill-768x456.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px" /></figure>

<p></p>

<p>Looking at the Aurora forecast websites, there seems to be a chance of seeing it again tonight (although maybe not quite so intense), providing there&#8217;s no cloud cover.</p>
